The new century would, at least ostensibly, bring further confirmation that Rock's time as the dominant commercial force in popular music had passed: among other factors, "Electronic Dance Music" finally reached the American masses unlike the aborted "Electronica" moment of 1996-1997; and Hip Hop morphed with the pop mainstream, the two becoming difficult to distinguish in the Twenty-Teens. Rock did remain a money-making factor in the realm of live performance, especially older acts. Then again, given how important concerts had newly become (due to the decline of recordings as distinct entities to be purchased individually) was Rock so dead after all? Regardless, the Rock music one will find listed here is comprised of, in this writer's opinion, rare moments of brilliance in a hazy field of drab... non-entities! Rock music in the new century has been split between two overlapping tendencies. First, the new, mainstream understanding of "Indie," both more amateurish/ fringe than ever, with self-released artists possessing little prospect of commercial success crowding out established independent labels, but also bizarrely trending toward cutesy, soundtrack-ready pap, well suited to a mass culture increasingly addicted to televisual entertainment. And second, what remains of commercially-relevant Rock: post-Grunge "Modern [Hard] Rock"; groups tied to the "Jam Band" scene; and of course those aging Rock veterans filling up arenas (in rare cases), theatres, and Las Vegas casinos, paying tribute to themselves.
For the Aughts, 38 tracks are listed, 149 albums. The totals through 2009 are 2119 tracks, 2737 albums.
