The persistent tendency, at least in Western civ, is to speak of a "Sixties," reflecting the broader irrational tendency to analyze decades as if the years, 1960-1969, as a singular entity were more worthy of study than the years, 1964-1973 or 1954-1963, for example. Even a zealot high on nostalgia for a mythical past time must admit that the ten years that comprise the Sixties, in popular music at least, were neatly and definitively split in two, if not in early '65 by Bob Dylan, the Byrds, and “Mr. Tambourine Man”, then in '64 by Beatlemania/ the British Invasion. This rough dividing point is also where the album begins to prevail over the single, a trend confirmed within a few years by the growing dominance of stereophonic sound and improved playback options. The 45 enjoys one last hurrah in 1965, driven by the Motown label and Phil Spector's operation both reaching their peak and by British acts releasing non-L. P. singles.
For the Sixties, 449 albums are listed, 742 tracks. The totals through 1969 are 517 albums and 1529 tracks.
