the list

Nineteen-seventy-one serves as "Peak Rock" for us. The album era is in full swing, though by 1976 the number of singles of significance goes back up, reflecting the Disco moment and the rise of Punk Rock. The high number of albums reflects not only the robust fertility of the Rock-Soul mainstream in its diversifying forms (Soft Rock, both in the sense of the Carpenters and Bread and in the form of the "singer-songwriter", Heavy Metal, Progressive Rock, Funk, Glam Rock, British Folk-Rock, Disco, and more) but also a global reach that the genre would enjoy throughout the Eighties at least, and what we could call a form of cultural imperialism, with the genres/ movements Tropicália, Reggae, and Afro Beat being part of the Rock story, however awkwardly. Progressive Rock shades into Kraut Rock and other outré artists, contributing to this era's bounty. Funk, as a defined musical concept, complemented the previous era's "Soul," a superior term for Rhythm and Blues that sadly got jettisoned in later conservative times. As a genre, it joined "Prog" Rock in shading into the Fusion Jazz that also flourished in these years. Prog, Funk, and Fusion joined Heavy Metal in elevating the electric guitarist to an exalted, if not necessarily primary, position, as far as many were concerned: the "guitar god."

For the Seventies, 421 tracks are listed, 980 albums. The totals through 1979 are 1599 tracks and 1466 albums.
