Both the American "Golden Age of Hip Hop" and the Acid House/ Rave revolution in European popular music happened in the years, 1987-1992. Indeed, this six-year stretch was a revolutionary time for popular music. Within the Rock world, there occurred, first, the movement, in the U. S., of Indie Rock from the fringes of the industry toward the mainstream. Concentrated however unfortunately in the Grunge scene of Seattle, nonetheless this "Alternative" moment brought new attention to a vast "underground" of American Rock, fortified by the peak commercial success and artistic maturity of veteran post-Punk/ early Indie artists like the Cure, R. E. M., Sonic Youth, Depeche Mode, Morrisssey, the Fall, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Siouxsie and the Banshees, et al. (many of these acts from the U. K., where there had not been such a stark divide between a conservative Rock mainstream and the Indie masses). Second, Heavy Metal, increasingly global in scale, continued to subdivide and conquer, the Thrash/ Death/ Doom/ Black/ Stoner/ Power/ Grindcore/ Progressive/ whatever artists pushing against any boundaries in the way of its sonic extremes. Nonetheless, due to the rise of Hip Hop and House/Techno, popular music by the end of the decade was no longer constrained by the limits of what we could call the Rock Era; the commercial success of Hip Hop and the growth of "Electronica," even more global and more genre-happy than Metal, made this so.

For the Nineties, 82 tracks are listed, 441 albums. The totals through 1999 are 2081 tracks, 2588 albums.
